A Night in the Souk

Madinat Jumeirah is a complex of shops and restaurants, built in the traditional arab/persian gulf style. It is built around an artifical channel and lake, very near to the landmark hotel of Burj Al Arab in Dubai. However the style is very different than most development in Dubai : the architecture is based on traditional elements and the complex reminds a souk, i.e. a traditional open market.

The end result is a very nice departure from Dubai’s usual extravaganza of skyrises, taller and even taller buildings of glass and concrete that characterizes modern Dubai. It is very pleasant to walk and spend some time there, have a dinner maybe (since it is open air, it is not practical to have lunch due to the heat for most of the year). An added bonus is the proximity to Burj Al Arab, you can see the monumental hotel in the background from almost anywhere in the souk. It also possible to hire a boat for a short tour of the channels and the lake
